Bulgaria has joined Thursday in the celebrations of the 40th anniversary of the Earth Day initiative.

The first Earth Day was marked in 1970 in the USA and was aimed at inspiring awareness and appreciation of the environment. Today more than 200 countries across the world observe Earth day on April 22.

The theme for this year’s Earth Day is the “Green Generation” initiative which encourages people to get involved in individual or collective activities to improve their health and participate in building a solution to urgent national and global issues, such as climate change or the world’s water crisis.

“The green generation motto stands for humanity’s efforts to deal with the problems of climate change. It is an issue that affects us all. We all must take responsibility for our actions and contribute to resolving the problem of climate change,” said on Thursday Bulgaria’s Deputy Environment Minister Evdokiya Maneva as cited by BNR.

Various initiatives have been organized in cities throughout the country to mark the World Earth Day. About 500 children and students will partake in the celebrations in the northern Bulgarian city of Vratsa and a round table discussion on the “Ecological condition of the region.”

Interactive environment-related games will be organized for the children of the Bulgarian village of Chelopek where the first-ever ‘adopted’ centennial tree in Bulgaria is located.

Students from the professional ceramics high school in the Bulgarian city of Sevlievo will go on a hike down the ecotrail “Vidimsko pruskalo” in the Central Balkan Natural Park while children in the Bulgarian city of Gabrovo will take part in the “Paper for trees” initiative.

Earth Day was founded by US Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in on April 22, 1970.

Many communities celebrate Earth Week, an entire week of activities focused on environmental issues. The first Earth Week originated in Philadelphia in 1970. Earth Day Network, a group that wishes to become the coordinator of Earth Day globally, asserts that Earth Day is now observed on April 22 on virtually every country on Earth.
