Bulgarian and Greek municipalities have come together to offer joint tourist tours of the Rhodope Mountains.

This has been announced by Zlatka Nikolova, head of the Bulgarian Association of Rhodope Municipalities based in the southern city of Smolyan, as cited by BTA.

The municipalities on the two sides of the border are promoting “The Mountain of Orpheus” at tourism expos in various countries.

They have prepared together tourist routes from the Rhodope Mountain, which is located mostly in Bulgaria – to the Aegean Sea coast. The project is financed with EU funding. The promotional materials are in Bulgaria, Greek, and English.

The Bulgarian Association of Rhodope Municipalities is partnering with the border association Delta Rhodope, and the Association of the Municipalities from the region of Xanthi.

Nikolova has pointed out that the opportunities for crafting cross-border tourist packages have increased vastly after the opening of the Zlatograd-Xanthi border crossing point in January 2010.
