Bulgaria’s Agriculture Ministry announced Thursday that the tests of a dead bird found near the Black Sea city of Varna came out positive for avian flu, H5N1.

The tests have been conducted by the Lab of the National Veterinary Services.

There are no known other cases of avian flu in the region nevertheless the authorities have ordered preventive measures.

In the beginning of the week the Varna regional lab also tested the bird found dead in the “St. St. Konstantin and Elena” resort near Varna. The test showed positive results for the H5N1 virus.

The European Commission has been notified.

The internet site of the National Veterinary Services www.nvms.government.bg has published phone numbers for citizens to alert about suspicions of avian flu.
