A group of architects and archaeologists supported by the Sofia Municipality, the Ministry of Culture, and the Sofia Metropolitan company, presented Sunday a project entitled “Serdika – Ancient Cultural-Communication Project”.
It provides for making accessible to the public the streets and structures of one-time Thracian and Roman town of Serdika located in the very heart of today’s Sofia.
During the latest archaeological excavations carried out as part of the construction of the second line of the Sofia Metro archaeologists have found two medieval churches close to the Central Department Store (TZUM).
The project covers an area of 16,5 decares including the Independence Square, part of the Maria Luiza Street, and two metro stations – 7-1 and 8-2. Thus, the archaeological heritage of the Bulgarian capital will be shown on the surface layer as well as underground, inside the metro stations.
The project is to be completed by 2012, and is expected to cost about BGN 20 M. The funding will be provided mainly by the municipally-owned Sofia Metropolitan company.
Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova has explained that funds could also come from EU operational programs.
