Bulgaria President Georgi Parvanov has welcomed the amendments to the GMO Act adopted by Parliament on Thursday, which in effect ban the cultivation of GM crops in the country.

"Under the pressure of numerous civil protests and as a result of the my expressed position to veto any non stringent amendments and to call for a referendum, ultimately, it was a reasonable decision," said Parvanov.

He added; “At this stage Bulgaria has managed to keep clear of GM crops and has created conditions for the development of organic farming.”

Parvanov, speaking in Blagoevgrad, also called on the center-right GERB government to create anti-crisis measures that really help the citizens of Bulgaria instead of being obsessed with the zero deficit target.
