Ahmet Davutoglu, the Foreign Minister of Turkey, is arriving on an official two-day visit to Bulgaria Thursday.
Davutoglu has been invited by his Bulgarian counterpart, Nikolay Mladenov. In addition to meeting with Mladenov, on Friday the Turkish Foreign Minister will be received by Bulgaria’s President, Prime Minister, and Parliament Chair.
On Friday afternoon the two Foreign Ministers will pay a visit to the Dzhumaya Mosque in Plovdiv.
Davutoglu’s visit is a follow-up of the meeting of the Prime Ministers of Bulgaria and Turkey in January 2010.
Bulgaria and Turkey officially have no political issues in their relations. However, about one million Bulgarians who are descendants of Bulgarian refugees from today’s European Turkey from the beginning of the 19th century claim compensations for the property their ancestors left behind.
At the same time, Turkey insists on resolving the problem with the retirement status of 50 000 Bulgarian Turks who emigrated to Turkey during the notorious “Revival Process” in the late 1980s, an assimilation campaign of the former communist regime. The emigrants in question claim the right to receive Bulgarian retirement pensions.
A bilateral working group has been formed in order to negotiate on these issues.
