The Human Rights Report of the US State Department on Bulgaria has been prepared in a well-intentioned tone, according to the Foreign Ministry.
Bulgaria’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Vesela Cherneva has stated Tuesday that the Report has accounted for the measures undertaken by the new government in order to tackle corruption and organized crime.
She said the report noted a plan of 59 measures of the Borisov government to fight corruption, the cracking down on the “Impudent” kidnappers’ gang, and progress in combating human trafficking.
Cherneva has admitted that the report does stress Bulgaria’s problems as far as disadvantaged and minority groups are concerned. In her words, the Bulgarian government is exerting its efforts to rectify those issues but that this will take a long time.
The annual Human Rights Report of the US State Department criticized Bulgaria over “pervasive” corruption, treatment of prisoners, situation of minorities, among other things.
