Bulgaria is offering a tricky friendship treaty to Macedonia, according to the Macedonian paper Utrinski Vesnik.
The newspaper has commented on the recent announced by the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry that it has offered Greece an all-out “friendship” and good neighborliness treaty.
According to the Utrinski Vesnik, at least four of the some thirty provisions of the draft treaty are controversial. Even though the exact text of the document has not been made public, the paper claims that Bulgaria is trying to set a trap for Macedonia as the latter is en route to joining the EU.
The editorial of the Utrinski Vesnik makes it clear that the suggestions of the Bulgarian side for a joint interpretation of history and shedding hate language are the most unnerving for Macedonia.
Another Macedonian paper, the Dnevnik, has cited the statement of Bulgaria’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Vesela Cherneva, she made two days ago, as saying she expected the two sides would start negotiations on the friendship treaty shortly.
Initially, the Macedonian Foreign Ministry denied even knowing about the draft treaty until Wednesday when its spokesperson said the document was being considered and analyzed seriously.
