US Ambassador to Bulgaria, James Warlick, has welcomed the Bulgarian Government’s arrests in Wednesday’s police operation codenamed “Octopus.“

A total of 14 people were arrested in the operation on Wednesday on charges of being part of a large-scale organized crime group; former top secret service agent Aleksei Petrov is also among them.

“The United States congratulates all law enforcement personnel involved in the courageous and professional actions they took in apprehending some of the most notorious suspected criminal figures in Bulgaria,” the statement of Ambassador Warlick reads.

His Excellency has pointed out that such coordinated action required the leadership and support of Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, Minister of Interior Tsvetanov and their senior staff.

He says that the Bulgarian people will be watching closely as the authorities proceed with the legal action under the respective charges.

“Ending the culture of impunity by ridding the streets of criminals is essential to strengthening rule of law. The Bulgarian legal system now has the opportunity to make a significant impact on the safety and security of the Bulgarian people,” Ambassador Warlick’s statement concludes.
