Petya Evtimova was appointed Wednesday Bulgaria’s new Deputy Education Minister by the Ministry’s Head, Sergey Ignatov.
Evtimova replaces Svetlana Lomeva and will be in charge of international relations and the EU funds. She has been working at the Ministry for over 8 years as Head of the International Law Department.
Ignatov says the main motive for the appointment is Evtimova’s experience and knowledge of EU legislation, which will increase the team’s capacity to realize the cabinet’s policy in the education sector and the absorption of the EU funds needed for the planned reforms.
Meanwhile, Lomeva told the Bulgarian National radio, BNR, that she was notified only Wednesday morning that she has been dismissed and is not aware of the motives behind the decision.
“I was personally invited by former Education Minister, Yordanka Fandakova (*now Mayor of Sofia from the ruling Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria – GERB party). This is not the best way to make decisions, but what can I do. Everyone has their management style,” Lomeva says.
Petya Evtimova represents the Ministry at the European Commission’s Youth Committee. She was born on March 29, 1968 in the Black Sea town of Kavarna in the Dobrich Region. Evtimova graduated from the English Language High School in the city of Dobrich and the University of World and National Economy in Sofia. Evtimova specialized in European Law at the Institute for International Organizations in Rome and is fluent in French and English. She is married and has one child.
The appointment turns the Education Ministry into the institution with some of the most political changes. The Ministry is yet to make a comment on Lomeva’s discharge.
