Bulgaria’s government has provided a total of BGN 3,8 M for the compensations of 500 members of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences who have been made redundant.
This was announced on Friday by Education Minister, Sergey Ignatov, who visited together with Prime Minister Boyko Borisov the Geophysics Institute and the Institute of Metal Sciences of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
Ignatov said the compensation funds had been promised by Finance Minister Simeon Djankov.
All 500 scientists who have been made redundant because of efforts to optimize the spending of the Academy are entitled to receive six monthly salaries each. They are mostly scientists of age who are sent into retirement.
Ignatov said that all active scientists will be able to continue working for the BAS even after their retirement but with new special contracts.
The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences is supposed to present at the end of January 2010 its Reform Plan, the Education Minister said.
“The BAS scientists know exactly how they have to reform the institution. They have good research and development products that can offer to private and state companies,” Ignatov said.
The Borisov government led by Finance Minister Simeon Djankov has declared an intention to reform and structure the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in order to do away with old methods of work and to make Bulgarian scientific products more marketable.
