Bulgaria: Bulgarian MEP Warns Jeleva Commissioner Bid May Fail Bulgarian MEPs have warned that Rumyana Jeleva's bid for EU commissioner, and PM Borisov's government, may be prejudiced by the issue of the Turkish-language referendum currently being proposed. Photo by BGNES

Bulgarian MEP Evgeny Kirilov has warned that Rumyana Jeleva may fail in her EU Commissioner bid if she does not distance herself from the Turkish-language news referendum issue.

Kirilov, a member of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D), has appealed to Prime Minister Boyko Borisov to extricate himself from this before “it turns into a wolf trap”. He said that the situation was developing so fast that it would quickly discredit the Bulgarian government. It was up to the Prime Minister to prevent this situation, and avoid putting the entire country at risk.

The MEP spelled out the risk – the letter “E” in GERB – Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria.

He pointed out that the support by PM Boyko Borisov for holding a referendum on the Turkish-language news on Bulgarian National Television (BNT), is urgently on the agenda of the European Parliament plenary session in Strasbourg in early January.

Iliana Iotova, S&D MEP and member of BSP, explained that, normally, topics of urgency are introduced into the agenda of the European Parliament only in cases where human rights are violated by people from third world countries.

MEP Kristian Vigenin commented that there has been a tendency to distance the image of Bulgaria from the principles of the European Union, and that the management methods of GERB and the government of Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, are the subject of comments in the plenary room.

Vigenin also criticized the amount with which Bulgaria will participate in the fund to combat climate change.

MEP Ivaylo Kalfin added that the Bulgarian government has not fully utilized opportunities of EU employment. The budget committee, where he is vice-chairman, has not received any request by Bulgaria for a grant from the Global Fund, which serves as a financial tool to assist redundant workers in large industrial enterprises.

He said that politics in Bulgaria is pro-crisis and not anti-crisis, and that the policy led by Finance Minister Simeon Diankov is increasing the critical situation.

Ivaylo Kalfin, BSP MEP and former Bulgarian Minister of Foreign Affairs, advised Rumyana Jeleva to prepare herself on those topics on which she will be working, because they are not quite as simple as they may seem.

Her sector (International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response Commissioner) may not be a priority one, he commented, but there will be interest shown in it and it is very important that Jeleva convincingly answers questions related to the declaration of conflict of interests, during the hearing scheduled for January.
