The Board of Trustees of the American College of Sofia announced Tuesday the appointment of Paul Johnson to serve as the next President of the College.

Dr. Johnson will take on the post on July 1, 2010. He succeeds the current President of ACS, Tom Cangiano, whose mandate terminates at the end of school year 2009-2010.

Paul Johnson holds a Ph.D. in Educational Administration and has extensive experience as a teacher, a school principal (director) and a system-wide senior administrator. He currently serves as Superintendent of Schools, Bismarck, North Dakota, serving 11,000 students. He is President of the North Dakota Education and Standards and Practices Board, appointed by the governor of the State. His distinguished career as a senior administrator led to his selection as the 2008 Superintendent of the Year in North Dakota and as a 2008 finalist (one of four) for the National Superintendent of the Year award in the United States. Dr. Johnson also teaches graduate courses in the areas of school finance and business management on a part-time basis at two universities.

Dr. Johnson is moving to Sofia together with his wife Teresa Monicken who holds a bachelor's degree in Speech-Language Pathology and a master's degree in Audiology. Paul and Teresa have two children, both attending colleges in Minnesota.

In their press release, the Board of Trustees expresses their gratitude for the many great contributions current President Tom Cangiano has made to the development of the American College.

"His implementation of innovative ideas has made an important difference at the College academically, socially and culturally," the press release reads.

The next step in Tom Cangiano’s career is President of Shady Side Academy in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
