British architect Alexander Daw has slammed the Bulgarian planning system and land law while urging the new Bulgarian government to cut down on bureaucracy.

In an exclusive interview for novinite.com, Alexander Daw, whose company Oscar Architects involves Eduardo Rifa who helped to design the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, explained that architectural design has not been concentrated on enough in Bulgaria. He said "it is not yet accepted culturally (in Bulgaria) that good design improves lives and the quality of living."

Daw went on to say that the financial crisis has affected his business and that responsible bank lending would turn things around; "It has certainly affected us, nearly all our major projects that were due to start have been put on hold, mainly due to a lack of finance rather than a lack of will. For me the problem lies with the blanket lending practices of the banks that refuse to offer business to projects based on location and merit.

Daw concluded by urging the new center-right GERB government to cut down on the bureaucracy in the planning system to bring foreign investors back to Bulgaria; "The bureaucracy in the planning systems stifles business development and foreign investment that should be encouraged especially in terms of developing and restoring the cultural centers in Bulgaria. The institutions exist, but they are under funded and poorly managed."
