NOVA TV DEPRIVED NATIONAL TELECOM LICENCE

Politics | July 14, 2001, Saturday // 00:00

The Supreme Administrative Court deprived Nova Television of its national air licence. The case was initiated following a complaint of the consortium `Media Broadcasting Services` lead by the former famous TV moderator and columnists Kevork Kevorkyan and the Swedish MTG group. The court decision was taken 2 days after the ambassador of Sweden Sten Ask visited chief prosecutor Nikola Filtchev. The decision cancels the decision of the cabinet of November 16, 2000 for granting a telecom licensee to Nova Television. The decision is not subject to appeal. However, it doesn`t mean that the licence will be automatically granted to Modern Times Group, sources from SAC explained. A new tender will be announced, court sources specified. There was no official comment on the part of Nova Television management since they haven`t acquainted themselves with the court decision. Nova Television plans to take part in the next contest too, declared Ivan Garelov, one of the directors, also famous moderator and commentator. Nova TV was supposed to be the third national-wide private TV in Bulgaria. Channel 1 is a state owned program, bTV is the only private national wide owned by one of the companies, which belongs to Rupert Murdoch.
