Bulgaria Parliament Takes over Control of Classified Information

The Parliamentary Committee for Control over the State Security Agency (DANS) will also control the State Commission for Security of Information.
The decision was made Thursday by the Members of the Bulgarian Parliament (MPs) with the motif that this will allow the transfer and the storage of classified information and individual access to it.
The MPs also approved the code for the work of the State Commission for the Security of Information. The Commission's authorities include investigation of individuals who apply for permission to access classified information and the issuing of access certificates.
The Parliamentary Committee will be headed by the leader of the Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB) party and Co-Chair of the Blue Coalition, Ivan Kostov. The MPs passed the Committee's rules without any debates.
During its Thursday session, the Parliament also discussed the work of the so-called "Files Committee" in charge of examining the files of the former Communist State Security and exposing its agents. 6,000 individuals have already been checked-up for connections with the State Security. The committee is currently checking investigators and people working in internet media. There are also scheduled check-ups of print media and the National Health Insurance Fund. New names will be unveiled in mid-September.
