Illegal Bulgarian migrant laborers, working as housekeepers or looking after sick and old people in Italy, can benefit from the amnesty the country introduced for this sector, coming into effect on September 1.

The amnesty will give the opportunity to thousands of Bulgarians to officially sign up in the Italian social system and receive monthly social security benefits.

The eligible candidate should prove that he or she has been working in the country for at least three months.

Applications can be submitted throughout September online at the site of Italy's Interior Ministry, at the municipalities or trade union offices.

In order to obtain legal documents, the candidate needs to make the employer confirm the job and pay a EUR 500 fee.

Estimates show that the new regulation will bring at least EUR 300 M into the state budget.
