A special panel, investigating Romania's communist-era police files, has exposed the country's current envoy to the Bulgarian capital Sofia as collaborator of the Ceausescu-era intelligence service Securitate.

The National Council for Study of Securitate Archives has submitted the collected documents about Anton Pacuretu to the Appellate Court in Bucharest, the Romanian newspaper Cotidianul reported.

The trial which should confirm or reject his collaboration to the secret police has been scheduled for January 26, 2010.

Romania's Foreign Ministry said in a press release circulated to the media that it will come up with a final decision on the issue after the court delivers its verdict.

The name of Ambassador Anton Pacuretu has been added to a black list that the files commission has been preparing and which already features Gabriel Arteni, former councilor to the Foreign Ministry, and Sorin Buta, MP from the Democratic-Liberal Party.

The files of the former secret police in Romania and neighboring Bulgaria a thorny issue in the two countries, especially when it comes to the past of high-ranking officials.

The communist-era security services are believed to have remained potent after the fall of communism with the ex-operatives closely linked to the political and business establishment.
