Bulgaria's Health Ministry is going to create an audit committee to check public tenders for medications conducted in the last two years.
The news was reported by Darik radio, citing Teodora Zaharieva from the Center for Protection of Healthc Care Rights.
Zaharieva said that contracts for high-cost medications potentially involve numerous violations, pointing out the Ministry has requested way less cancer treatment medications than the ones needed by cancer patients in the country and 2/3 of them still cannot obtain the lifesaving medicine.
Zaharieva is slated to participate in the audit committee. She believes the high-cost medications need to be dispensed by the National Health Insurance Fund, instead of the current practice to manage them through a special Commission at the Health Ministry.
"The Commission is limiting medications by adoption of additional criteria. And we believe we know why - to restrict the number of those receiving treatment. I wish to meet the individual that ordered 8,000 medications instead of the requested by oncology clinics 16,000 ones," Zaharieva said.
The exact date to begin the audit is not yet being designated.
