Twenty-three waste collecting depots that have not yet been started will be constructed until the end of 2010 with European Union funding.

Among the locations of the depots are Gabrovo, Pazardzhik, Pleven, Vidin, Veliko Tarnovo, Varna, Sofia, Botevgrad, and Kostinbrod, Deputy Minister of Environment and Water, Evdokiya Maneva, said Tuesday.

In her words, this is the way punitive measures from the European Commission to be avoided or at least reduced. EC may take measures against Bulgaria over failure to keep the deadlines for the depots to be put into operation.

Maneva intends to approach the judicial authorities in case municipalities where there are 27 constructed and not functioning waste depots are not willing to cooperate.
