Bulgaria: 21st International Olympiad in Informatics Kicks off in Bulgaria's Plovdiv

The 21st International Olympiad in Informatics was opened Sunday in the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv by President Georgi Parvanov.

A record number of countries - 85 - are participating in the Olympiad in Plovdiv. The participants are high school students below 20 years of age. Each country is represented by a team of four students.

As a hosting country, Bulgaria has the right to have 2 teams plus one team from the hosting city. The informatics competition is going to continue until August 15, 2009.

The first International Olympiad in Informatics took place in May 1989 at the initiative of Bulgaria, when it was attended by participants from 13 countries.
