Bulgaria's new Defense Minister, Nikolay Mladenov, said Sunday the Defense Ministry had been turned into something like a construction firm in the recent years.
"I have the feeling that in the last few years the Defense Ministry has been turned into a construction entrepreneurship company that does not have a direct relation to the defense of the country", Mladenov stated in Varna during the celebrations of the 130th anniversary since the founding of the Bulgarian Navy.
He made it clear his top priorities would be to prevent cuts in the salaries of the military, and to guarantee sufficient funds for the Bulgarian military missions abroad.
Mladenov noted that the staff of the Ministry was too large, and would have to be optimized. The Defense Ministry employs 1 440 people, and its Social Agency - about 800.
