Macedonia has rejected the request of the Bulgarian Foreign Affairs Ministry to reconsider the three month jail sentence of Bulgarian citizen Spaska Mitrova.

"We expect the Bulgarian authorities to distance themselves from this classical manipulation of a legal case, as relations between two friendly countries should not be held hostage to those who want to cover up their family disputes and criminal actions," the Macedonian Foreign Affairs Ministry announced.

On Tuesday the Bulgaria Foreign Ministry invited the Macedonian Ambassador, Divna Trichkovska for talks about the case and offered to help investigate the case.

"A verdict which takes away and imprisons the mother of a small child because of an everyday quarrel, leaving the child to be taken to a social service home, does not meet our criteria for humane behavior, and does not meet European criteria in similar cases", the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry announced.

"Bulgaria will consider the Macedonian approach to similar cases as one of the criteria that will show the country's readiness to make the changes which will allow it to start its European integration", the Ministry's letter continued.

Mitrova was recently sentenced to 3 months in jail even though she recently had a baby, because she did not allow her former husband to stay at her parents' home in order to visit their older child after their divorce.

The reasons why Mitrova requested a divorce included her former husband constantly abusing her physically, and insulting her because of her national identity.
