Bulgarian Socialist Leader: I Will Not Hide from My Responsibilities: Bulgarian Socialist Leader: I Will Not Hide from My Responsibilities

Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) leader and former PM, Sergey Stanishev, stated that his party members "can look people squarely in the eyes."

Stanishev was referring to the recent BSP election loss and the record of the previous government in his opening statement at the traditional BSP meeting at Mount Buzludzha, which is being held under the motto "Strength for Change".

Due to poor organization the start of the meeting was delayed by over 30 minutes but when it did start Stanishev launched into a rallying cry to his party by quoting famous Bulgarian poet Ivan Vazov; "All of Bulgaria are watching us now. This Mount is tall, it will save us. If we had run, better that we had died."

He continued by stating that this Buzludzha is sad for him but that he will not run and hide from his responsibilities.

On July 18 the National Council of the Bulgaria Socialist Party (BSP) voted to keep Stanishev as their party leader after losing their position in power at the July 5 general elections.

In 1891 on Mount Buzludzha the foundations of the Socialist Movement in Bulgaria were laid. The monument erected at the site and unveiled in 1981 on the occasion of the 1300th anniversary of the founding of the Bulgarian state is actually shaped as a UFO.
