Bulgaria: Bulgaria PM Replaces Roads Agency Head over Poor Management

Bulgaria's Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, has removed Yanko Yankov from the position of Executive Director of the National Agency "Road Infrastructure".

One of Borisov's major motives for sacking Yankov is the lack of good communication with the EU institutions that are in charge of allocating infrastructure funds.

The rest of the motives include selecting unnecessarily expensive outside consultants, failing to achieved the set goals, and excessive spending in time of crisis.

Borisov has appointed Dimitar Ivanov on Yankov's position; Ivanov was the head the of the Roads Agency in August-October 2008 after the institution was shaken by a corruption scandal at the beginning of 2008. Ivanov resigned over health issues.

The German expert Klaus Dieter Stolle, who was part of Yankov's team as a CEO adviser, is going to retain his position.

Meanwhile, Bulgaria's Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, announced of a special police operation at the Roads Agency last night; the police had suspicions that the outgoing management of the Agency might try to destroy incriminating documentation. These suspicions, however, have failed to materialize after last night's inspection.
