Bulgaria's law enforcement authorities are ready to award bonuses of up to BGN 50 000 to joint prosecution and police teams who solved top crimes.
This was announced Thursday by the Bulgarian Deputy PM and Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, after his meeting with the Chief Prosecutor, Boris Velchev.
However, the sizable bonuses will be paid out only if the resolved case in question ends in effective sentences of the top criminals.
"We have total coordination between the Interior Ministry and the Prosecutor's Office," Tsvetanov said together with Velchev.
The main topic of their meeting was the forming of joint teams for investigation and prosecution made up of officers from the Interior Ministry, and the State National Security Agency DANS on the one side, and prosecutors from the Chief Prosecutor's Office, on the other.
Tsvetanov said the joint teams could start functioning as early as September because this new initiative did not require legislative changes or adopting new legislation.
The news about this new law enforcement approach of the Bulgarian authorities was first announced on Wednesday by the Chief Prosecutor Velchev, who said the main tasks of the joint teams of prosecutors and top policemen would be related to the 21 recommendations made by the European Commission in the annual Monitoring Report of Bulgaria's progress from July 22.
"The state must take good care of these officers who prevent and fight the abuse of money of the Bulgarian taxpayers. When we are talking about the siphoning off of millions of BGN from VAT, it is understandable that the state should set aside BGN 50 000 for a bonus for the teams who worked to bring criminals to justice", Tsvetanov said.
