The recently elected members of the new Bulgarian Parliament will no longer be able to switch from one parliamentary group to another, or to form new parliamentary groups.

The parliament approved the ban with the votes of 157 MPs. Twenty-four voted against, while eighteen abstained.

When an MP leaves or is expelled from a parliamentary group, he or she will remain independent, the adopted regulation says.

It was tabled by the right-wing Blue coalition and nationalist Ataka party in a bid to curb the seemingly limitless possibilities of retailoring the parliament during its term.

The 40th Bulgarian Parliament was notorious for the large number of MPs who switched their parliamentary groups or started new ones.

Fifty MPs in the country's 240-seat unicameral parliament swapped their parliamentary group or formed a new one since the summer of 2005, data shows.

The five parliamentary groups from 2005 doubled to ten groups in June 2009.
