A dense, thick smog of suffocating dust enveloped Sofia's central metro station "Serdika", sending scores of passengers running outside.

The incident occurred around 10:45 am Friday morning.

While passengers were leaving in a hurry, a woman suffering from asthma told a reporter of the Bulgarian news agency, BGNES, that she had asthma attacks for several days in a row after using the subway.

Metro Security confirmed that the smog has been a problem lately, explaining it with construction works to connect the "Serdika" stop with the one near the Sofia University.

The workers lift accidentally, from time to time, the protecting canvas screens and the air current pushes all construction dust into the passenger hall, the authorities explain.
