An unknown amount of chlorine has leaked from a bottle in Bulgaria's second largest city, Plovdiv, Friday evening.

The incident happened near the so-called Rowing Base in the city, the Plovdiv City Hall informs.

Three firefighter teams and teams of the Civil Defense in the city worked all through the night to put the situation under control and the location has been sealed until 7:30 am Saturday morning.

Several people have been sent to the hospital over complaints of suffocation, but all, except one person, have been treated and released.

The Plovdiv Deputy Mayor in charge of the city's security, Rusi Panchev, stated that the City Hall has been on the brink of declaring an emergency situation, but the good work of the firefighters and Civil Defense team have prevented it.

Panchev informed the chlorine bottle has been very large, in the size of a 800-liter barrel, and was located in an abandoned building whose owner is currently unknown.

The police are investigating the case.

The City Hall will held a press conference about the incident later Saturday.
