Ornithologists from Sweden, the Netherlands and the UK, along with Bulgarian colleagues begin monitoring the biodiversity of two Black Sea coastal lakes.

The research will last about a week and is taking place for the 10th year in a row. The scientists finance the expedition with their own funds.

The ornithologists are going to study the Atanasovsko and Pomoriisko lakes.

The Atanasovsko lake has over 233 plant species and is called "Bulgaria's Bird Heaven." 300 bird species live there compared to a total of 400 for the entire country. 12 species among them are listed as globally endangered while 17 are included in Bulgaria's Red Book.

The Pomoriisko lake is also known for its rare plants and mostly birds from Bulgaria's Red Book.
