Daniel Mitov Ready for Foreign Minister Role Amid Geopolitical Test in Bulgaria
Daniel Mitov, Deputy Chairman of GERB, has expressed his readiness to assume the position of Acting Foreign Minister
The leader of the far-right party "Ataka", Volen Siderov, practically spoiled the remembrance events for the 133 year since the heroic death of revolutionary and poet Hristo Botev, and the honoring of all Bulgarian freedom fighters.
Each year on June 2, the day the revolutionary hero and poet Botev was killed in battle as a leader of an armed detachment fighting against Ottoman Turkish troops during the April Uprising, Bulgaria honors the memory of those who died in the struggle for liberation from the Ottoman Empire.
On Tuesday, however, several minutes before the official remembrance ceremonies at the Vola Mount close to Vratsa where Botev was killed and his troops defeated, Siderov stood up next to the podium and started shouting out Ataka's campaign promises.
After a short clash with the Ataka leadership, the police guarding the event managed to seize Siderov's loudspeaker. Siderov eventually managed to get back his loudspeaker after explaining to the police that Ataka had the right to use before 11 am.
"No one can stop the onset of the nationalists. The police tried to stop the Bulgarian patriots. Ataka's supporters are ready to die rather than serve the Turkish toadies as slaves", Siderov declared as cited by BGNES.
Siderov also promised that once Ataka entered the Bulgarian government, nobody would be speaking in Turkish on the national media and in public places.
Just minutes before the solemn remembrance ceremony, the Chair of the GERB party, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, arrived at the Vola Mount on horseback together with GERB party supporters.
Bulgaria's Prime Minister and Socialist Party leader Sergey Stanishev also arrived for the events together with the Socialist MEP, Kristian Vigenin.
Tzvetanov, Stanishev, and Vigenin's appearance triggered Ataka's leader Siderov to shout out loud at them "faggots" and "a gang of homosexuals" who have "turned Bulgaria into a queer gathering".
"Let those plasmodia be afraid", Siderov shouted apparently meaning the Socialist-led governing coalition. He also demanded that the Prime Minister Stanishev come closer to him so that he could "slap his in the face".
The whole dramatic episode took place during the theatrical reenactment of the final battle of Botev's troops with the Ottoman Turkish forces.
