More than 16% of fuels offered on the Bulgarian market do not meet the legal requirements.

That was announced Monday by Bulgaria's Energy Minister, Petar Dimitrov.

In his words, Bulgaria's State Agency for Meteorological and Technical Surveillance which is responsible for fuels quality control has checked 80 facilities for liquid fuels. 23 of the samples taken did not meet the legal requirements.

Violations regarding addition of bio fuel to regular fuels are widespread, Minister Dimitrov explained. Since the beginning of 2008, all dealers are required to mix both kinds of fuels.

According to Bulgarian legislature, every liter of fuel must contain 5% of bio fuel. Currently, there are no gas stations in Bulgaria that offer such types of gasoline.

The officials, though, have not imposed fines on anyone for that violation so far. The Bulgarian government may suffer severe financial sanctions from the EU regarding that environmental measure.
