Bulgaria might reduce its budget surplus as a large surplus becomes no longer neeeded, the Bulgarian Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev said Wednesday.
In Kostinbrod, Sofia District, where Stanishev opened two new factories, he explained that the budget surplus was a measure to deal with the imbalance of the trade deficit and the current account deficit.
In the recent months, however, the current account deficit has shrunk as part of the crisis effects, and thus it could be reduced. The government's most important part of the budget policies remain its investment program and the social protection of the Bulgarian population, Stanishev said.
"In the last couple of months we see a sharp drop of the current account deficit. If this trend continues, we could go to lower levels of budget surplus because this measure will no longer be necessary", Stanishev explained.
The Prime Minister restated the three major anti-crisis measures of the government - keeping the currency peg, providing social protection, and supporting the real sector.
PM Stanishev explicitly said Bulgaria had all reasons to be satisfied with the results from his visit to Moscow and the agreements he made with the Russian side over the South Stream pipeline, and the Russian natural gas supplies.
In his words, the most important thing was to preserve the existing arrangements with the Russians for the transit of 17 billion cubic meters of gas per year. He pointed out that Bulgaria would not have any losses from any additional natural gas transits through its territory.
