The Director of the Bulgarian Energy Holding, Galina Tosheva, has predicted that the EU-sponsored Nabucco gas transit pipeline will be completed before its Russian rival project, South Stream.

In an interview for the Bulgarian National Radio on Wednesday, Tosheva said Nabucco was a greater priority because it would lead to a diversification of the EU gas supply.

In her words, this project was ahead of the Russian-sponsored South Stream and would be completed sooner.

Tosheva also said there were no secret deals made between the Bulgarian government and Russia during PM Stanishev's visit to Moscow.

On Tuesday, Stanishev and the Russian leaders reached an agreement over South Stream but the deal has not been formally signed yet.

The Bulgarian government has emphasized that all of its demands had been accepted by the Russian side which at one point floated the idea of using the Bulgarian gas transit network as part of the South Stream pipeline.

The Bulgarian authorities, however, have been sticking to the original agreement signed in January 2008 which provided for a separate South Stream pipe running parallel to the existing Bulgarian gas network.
