The Deadline For Submitting Bids For Cleaning Companies in Sofia Expires
The deadline for submission of bids in the tender for cleaning companies in Sofia, announced by the municipality, expires.
The Supreme Administrative Court rejected the appeal of Sofia municipality against the decision of the government to declare an emergency situation over the waste crisis.
According to the magistrates the municipality has not submitted proofs that the government's decision hurts its financial interests.
The government officially declared a state of emergency in Sofia at the beginning of April over lack of adequate waste removal, saying that the garbage problems threatened national security and citing health and environmental concerns. The opposition party of Sofia mayor GERB dismissed this as muscle pumping before a parliamentary election it is tipped to win.
Sofia mayor Boyko Borisov suspended last month the contract of the main waste collecting company over its failure to collect regularly the garbage and picked new waste collectors. In between Sofia was buried under piles of trash, overflowing from waste disposals.
Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev's government accuses the municipality of being incapable to find a long-term solution to the problem. The prime minister even established a crisis headquarters to organise the collection of rubbish in a sustainable manner.
Sofia mayor Borisov has repeatedly said that the crisis headquarters will just double the paycheck for cleaning the capital, but as he said on Monday "this is an issue up to the government to decide."
