Bulgaria will sign the South Stream gas pipeline contract next week during PM Sergey Stanishev's visit to Moscow.

That was announced Thursday by the Russian "Vremya Novostei Daily", citing an anonymous source, close to the Russian Government.

EU successfully have put pressure on Bulgaria to refuse signing an agreement on the South Stream gas pipeline, the newspaper said. Russia intends to build South Stream that will eventually compete with the Nabucco gas pipeline, which will be sourced by Azebaijan.

The situation resulted in Russia's PM Vladimir Putin denial to attend the world energy summit "Natural Gas for Europe. Security and Partnership" starting Friday in Bulgaria's capital, Sofia. Instead, he sent Russia's Energy Minister, Segey Shmatko.

The South Stream gas pipeline is meant to deliver Russian natural gas to to South and Central Europe. It will connect Bulgaria and Russia under Black Sea, and will split into two branches - one to Greece, and the other one to Italy and Central Europe.
