The number of Bulgarians who became millionaires in the 2008 tax year rose dramatically despite the global financial crisis.

At least forty Bulgarians made over BGN 1 M in 2008 and dutifully declared their income to the tax inspectors, the Bulgarian daily newspaper Standart reported Tuesday.

Along with the affluent Bulgarians who paid in advance their taxes in 2008, the numbers of those who have earned over a million for a year have considerably swollen.

The number of legal millionaires for the last five years has multiplied over eight times. In 2003 five Bulgarians paid over 100 000 levs of taxes, even though the tax rates were higher then.

Last year four Bulgarians declared over BGN 0.5 M to be further submitted after they have presented their tax returns.
