Bulgaria: Sofia Mayor Cuts Short Moscow Visit over Garbage Row Photo by BGNES

The mayor of Sofia has surprisingly put an end to his visit in Moscow following governmental plans to declare emergency in the capital over poor garbage collection.

Boyko Borisov has boarded an Aeroflot flight at 8 am Bulgarian time.

The trash disposal issue triggered a day earlier yet another round in the war of words between the mayor and Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev.

According to Borissov the Socialist-led government of Prime Minister Stanishev is trying to sabotage his activities instead of applauding him for removing the old garbage disposal concessionaire.

"Sofia is like Stalingrad during World War II. We are besieged by the government who wants to turn Sofia into a ghetto", Borisov told his Moscow counterpart Yury Luzhkov.

"Boyko Borisov should mind his own business first, and only then should he be asking questions," the prime minister fired back, adding that Sofia is the dirtiest capital in Europe.
