Bulgarian consumers should have the final say in introducing monthly or quarterly power bill, the head of the country's energy watchdog has proposed.

Bulgaria's energy watchdog fined at the end of March Czech power utility CEZ with BGN 500 000 for not introducing monthly power bills.

The State Energy and Water Regulatory Commission announced that the Czech utility company has not complied with its last year's ruling to end its three-month power bills by the end of March in a bid to protect consumers' interests.

The head of the regulator Konstantin Shushulov said the fine should be paid regardless of whether the power utility will meet the new deadline for the introduction of monthly bills, set at the end of June.

CEZ has not given any indications that it plans to do so, arguing that the shift would incur BGN 18 M of losses to the company.

The company supplies power to over 2 million households and companies in western Bulgaria, including the capital Sofia.
