Bulgaria Cuts Ban on Foreigners Entry

Politics » DOMESTIC | April 3, 2009, Friday // 13:20

Bulgaria's parliament has adopted legal amendments that according to the opposition give the green light for the return of Russian-born Israeli citizen Michael Chernoy.

The ban on foreigners to enter Bulgaria has been reduced from ten to five years under amendments to the Foreigners Act, which MPs passed at first reading on Friday.

The changes were tabled by the Socialist-led government and have triggered the ire of the opposition, which say they favor the return of controversial businessman Michael Chernoy, who was banned to enter Bulgaria in 2000.

The ban can be prolonged if the person poses serious threat to the public order or the national security, the amendments read.

The amendments also increase the amount of the minimal investment for obtaining a permanent residence permit from USD 500 000 to EUR 670 000.
