Bulgaria's former Queen, Yoanna, had personally begged members of the Royal Court to vote against the monarchy in 1946.
The story was told Monday by 94-year-old Ivanka Nikolova, from the village of Kurtovo Konare. Nikolova, who is a witness in the civil suit of former Bulgarian Prime Minister and Tsar, Simeon Saxe-Coburg, and his sister Maria-Louisa, over the ownership of the "Krichim" palace, said Yoanna wanted people to vote against the monarchy during the 1946 referendum, because she believed this was the only way to spare the life of her child Simeon.
The elderly woman lived in the "Krichim" estate from 1942 to 948 as the wife of the palace's telephone operator. Nikolova spoke during a closed-doors session of the Plovdiv Regional Court. She was questioned as a witness at her home by the Judge, the two lawyers for Simeon and his sister, and the two attorneys representing the Bulgarian State.
The witness, reportedly, stated that she knew from her husband, the land plot was purchased by Simeon's grandfather, Ferdinand, while his father, Boris III, built the palace.
Simeon's family lawyers thanked Nikolova for fulfilling her civic duties and helping establish the ownership facts.
The State attorneys were, however, adamant that the elderly woman did not know and would not have any way of knowing circumstances to clarify the disputed property rights. They further added that, to the contrary, Nikolova's testimony only proved the "Krichim" palace was used as a State residence, not as a private property.
The State is going to call as their witness the 81-year-old Alexander Ninkov, also from Kurtovo Konare, who is insisting Ferdinand appropriated, with the help of the police, privately owned crop fields. Ninkov alleges he was one of those heir owners, whose lands were forcefully included in the limits of the "Krichim" palace in 1902.
The magistrates scheduled the next Court session for April 21. This is the first trial Simeon was forced to file over property rights on land allegedly owned by his father and grand-father.
