Bulgaria's Interior Minister Mihail Mikov has suggested that the policemen who threw away their shoulder boards and badges in the Sunday police protest should be sacked.

Ivan Pavlov, the chairman of the new Bulgarian Police Union, refuted Mikov's statement saying that he knew of no policemen who cast off their shoulder boards or badges during the protests.

Mikov said that he and Pavlin Dimitrov, Commissioner General of the Interior Ministry, agreed that any policemen who were shown to have ‘disrespected' their position during the police protest in Sofia on Sunday should be removed from service.

He added that the actions of some of the police during the protest showed disregard to all of their colleagues, all Bulgaian citizens and personally to him, Darik Radio reported Tuesday.

Mikov, who is currently accompanying President Parvanov on an official visit to Lithuania, also stated that the police protests went too far according to the Interior Ministry and that "it is very bad, when people from the security system, believe that they are above the law."

Mikov pointed out that the police had already had a 5% rise in their wages this year, unlike most other sectors of the economy where wages are frozen due to the global financial crisis.
