Bulgarian Farmers to Receive BGN 300 Million Aid Amid Russia-Ukraine Crisis
In a bid to support its agricultural sector amidst the ongoing tensions stemming from Russia's war against Ukraine, Bulgaria announces a significant aid package for farmers
Bulgarian farmers will receive the EU 2009 subsidy after December 1, the Agriculture Minister, Valeri Tsvetanov, announced Wednesday.
He spoke before the protesting milk farmers, who were attending a peaceful rally in front of the Agriculture Ministry.
Nearly 80% (BGN 400 M) of the EU subsidy have been payed to the farmers in the last three months, Tsvetanov added.
Milk producers from all over Bulgaria attended a peaceful rally in front of the Agriculture Ministry on Wednesday protesting against the ineffective policy of the government in their sector, and the slow integration of the animal identification system. The system is required in order for a subsidy to be payed for each single cow a farmer owns.
"It is about time the government says clearly if there will be stock-farming in Bulgaria or not, because this is a very important branch and should not be abandoned", the head of the milk producers association in the Northern Bulgarian city of Pleven, Nikolay Romanov, said.
