The Sofia City Hall is creating a special task force to deal with the waste crisis, municipal councilers from the GERB party informed Wednesday.
The team will monitor the cleaning of the 19 city districts daily. Until now they have been serviced by the "Novera" company, which for days has failed to remove the trash, littering Sofia's streets. Until the contract with "Novera" is annulled, 8 smaller companies will clean the city, but they will not receive permanent contracts.
Earlier Wednesday, the Mayor of Sofia, Boyko Borisov, apologized to the capital's residents for the overflowing trash containers and said he was hopeful, the clear up will begin Wednesday evening.
"This might sound cynical, but with their refusal to remove the garbage, "Novera" is helping us make a decision. I would understand them not doing their job, if we did not pay them, but we have paid everything and they still want to go on strike," Borisov said, cited by Darik radio.
The councilers from the Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) party, whose informal leader is Borisov, explained that the waste issue was staged and "Novera" has been paid huge amounts of money to create the crisis and hurt Borisov's ratings months before the parliamentary elections.
In the mean time, photographers from Sofia News Agency noticed Wednesday that the contianers, overflowing with trash near the Presidential building the day before, had been emptied overnight.
