Bulgaria: Novinite.com with More News-Oriented, Jazzed up Layout

Novinite.com, Bulgaria's biggest news provider in English, made Tuesday a major move to an even more modern and user-friendly layout.

The new design is more news-oriented and better structured as it offers new sections, sub-sections and first-glance links, gives priority to the most important news and sports high-quality photos that illustrate them.

The changes in the layout give you, our readers, the opportunity to scan all the latest headlines as soon as you open the site. We believe that this is one more step to fulfill our promise to keep our constantly growing readership well informed, while saving your time.

Until you get used to manage the new layout you will have the possibility to optionally use the old one for one more month. All you have to do is click on the "Switch to the old design" link at the top right corner of the site.

We will be happy to hear what you think of the new layout by answering our poll question, published at the right bottom corner of the site, or send us your comments, suggestions and questions to editor@novinite.com.

The editorial staff of Novinite.com would like to thank you, our thousands of readers, for your interest, loyalty and informative feedback!

Just one thing - on the 'best in bulgaria' section - the websites would be easier to acces if they were links - instead of needin to copy and paste them into the browser.

Just an idea.. Def faster and photo stories are better!

Oh and maybe the in pictures section could rotate automatically??

Otherwise very nice... :) - good work!

For the most part I like the new layout. I am in agreement with bigger font.

The biggest complaint/suggestion I have regards the forum. I think someone already mentioned this, but it would much easier to follow a thread if you could have a direct link to the story with the accompanying comments directly from the original comment. (Am I confusing?)

I like how there is the page numbers at the bottom that you can click on instead of having to click on the "next" over and over.

Another option that is sometimes interesting on forums is a number at the bottom of how many people are online in addition to those that are logged in.

The "in pictures" looks good on the main page, but it is distracting when reading the forum.

Overall good job!

Well done Novinite, a few technical glitches are to be expected on launch. Good to see your on the ball with that.

A few usability comments:

1. Font sizes are MUCH too small on the homepage. If they remain that small I'll have to read my BG news elsewhere. Anyway: I thought the current trend was large fonts and lots of white space. The articles themselve are better but could also be larger

2. Your main menu is confusing. You've implemented it like tabs in the properties windows on MS Windows. Users don't expect the menu to change in this way on websites. Nor is it clear why the menu items are grouped in the two rows as they are.

3. Colours: These are too pale. You need more contrast between your colours, especially the menus.

And one standards issue:

Your HTML mark could do with some improvement. I know, it works, but as web professional myself I care for these things.

Ok, I'll shut up now.

Seems to work faster...Have to use it more to tell.

It just seems a little pale to me.

It works now, but it did not work then. Amazing what happens after you make your complaint....

just me,

If you're using Firefox, you can use the NoScript and AdBlock add-ons. The world will never be the same. :-)

Dear Milena,
Regarding the news part. I like the way the story titles are displayed in the left column with the first few lines of the story. I like having the option of breezing through quickly to get the general gist of what's going on and having the option to click "more," see the photo, etc.

Wouldn't it be great if the forum posts were displayed the same way? Author, subject, a few lines to get the gist, and the option to click "more" (or not?)

Hi Guys,

Thank you for your comments. We will work in the next few days for improving the forum, based on your opinions - bigger fonts and better visualization of the opinions.

just me - thanks for the note, we corrected the word :)

Excuse us for the first-hour bugs, while swithing to the new design. The old design and voting are ok now, so you can post your vote.

We are very interested in your opinion about the news part also :)

Best,
Milena Trapcheva

Editor,
I didn't notice if anyone else has already pointed this out, but "Author" is misspelled.

Editor,
It is unfortunate that the "subject" of each forum post is not a link, so there's no way to go back to read the original article or even the thread of other opinions if you read something interesting in "latest opinions." Having name/nick as a hyperlink doesn't provide much useful information at all.

Although it's not a bad idea, I find the flashing "in pictures" distracting, particularly on the screen where I'm writing my reply.

The new design works best on a 32" monitor. If you are using a laptop with a small screen, the fonts becomes too small to read. I need a new pair of reading glasses if this new format becomes permanent.

Let me start my comment by saying that my remarks are regarding the forum and they are from a point of view of a forum user. I don't understand the meaning of the More News-Oriented for I don't think that the new format has anything to do with it. It might be that the Layout is Jazzed up, but I don't follow Layout fashions so can't say anything about that.

I guess one can get used to anything. I remember the time when Novinite switched from the old old design and there was a lot of complaint. Eventually nothing was changed and people got used to the new format.

My problems with this "new" format of the forum are: The entries are not separated like on the "old" one, the font is small and the page is too crowded. I find it hard on the eye.

But then, I am not a "mod" and maybe it is time to go... lol

Good luck youngsters! ;-)

BTW, This not a capitulation by all means, however, I believe that this is the time to make my point.

Guess novinite.com does not really care about the usability of their products...
