The poll has been conducted for the upcoming United Nations' (UN) summit in Vienna dedicated to drug use issues and results from the "War on Drugs", declared by the UN ten years ago.
UN official data shows that for the last ten years cocaine production has increased by 20% while heroin production is up by the staggering 120%. During that same period drug related crimes in Bulgaria have risen to 2,844 compared to 752 in the beginning of the period.
Seven European countries, including Bulgaria, have united under the motto: "Ten Years of Failure - Let's End the Global War on Drugs." Each of the seven countries has conducted its own research on drug use.
In Bulgaria, the poll included 1,200 individuals. 76,5% of them see drug use as a serious problem for the country. Regarding the use of marihuana, 58% of those polled believe that it needs to be fought with draconian measures such as arrests and time behind bars while the other 40% favor more lenient punishment.
