The Bulgarian capital Sofia has been hit by a significant snowstorm with several centimeters of fresh snow covering all streets and boulevards since the early morning hours Thursday.

The city public transportation is experiencing significant delays with Sofia's major thoroughfares buried under a blanket of snow.

The city traffic police report numerous traffic congestion locations and fender-benders.

In the mean time, supporters of the nationalist Ataka Party have blocked the main Sofia "Vasil Levski" boulevard, in the area of the Turkish Embassy, adding to the traffic mayhem.

"Ataka" organized Thursday a march to commemorate the 136th anniversary of the hanging of Bulgaria's national hero Vasil Levski. They convened at noon before the Levski's monument in downtown Sofia, where the Party leader Volen Siderov delivered a speech.

The "Ataka" Members of the Parliament are protesting in front of the Turkish Embassy building with demands that Turkey officially apologizes for the genocide of Bulgarians during the Ottoman yoke and repayment of the USD 10 B debt they claim Turkey owes for land taken by force from Bulgarian owners in 1913.

The forecast is for the heavy snowfall to continue all through the day in Sofia and Western Bulgaria. Maximum temperatures in Sofia are not expected to be above 0 Degrees C.
