Bulgaria's TV News Lag behind Online Media

Society | February 16, 2009, Monday // 00:00

The Bulgarian TV Channels lag behind the online media and simply repeat over and over again current events, Totka Monova, Head of the Journalism and Media Department at the Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridsky" stated Monday, cited by the Darik radio.

Monova further pointed out that the Bulgarian press was absolutely harmless as far as the ruling politicians were concerned.

"The main problem during all those 20 years of transition is that the media environment in Bulgaria failed in creating a quality, alternative, elite press where the ratio between information and interpretation is exactly the opposite of the one of the tabloids. The entire press in the country looks like a tabloid," Monova is quoted as saying.

In the mean time, data from a poll conducted by the "Market Links" agency reveals that the politicians Sergey Stanishev, Boyko Borisov, Ivan Kostov and Georgi Parvanov have been the most mentioned people in Bulgarian media in January.

The poll has been based on the monitoring of all main newspapers, TV and radio programs in Bulgaria.

"Market links" further finds that 2/3 of all materials in the media are purely informative with main topics such as the protest rallies, the gas crisis, the upcoming elections, and statements made by members of the Cabinet.

The Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) has been the party mentioned the most often in January, followed by the National Movement for Stability and Progress (NMSP) and the ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms - the three members of the ruling coalition. The Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB) party has been the most mentioned opposition party.
