The Sofia Mayor Boyko Borisov announced Sunday that the new Sofia metro section between the Mladost quarter and Tsarigradsko Shose in Bulgaria's capital will be completed by the start of May 2009, Darik Radio reported.

Bulgarian PM Sergey Stanishev and Sofia Mayor Boyko Borisov made the first dig of the new expansion of Sofia's subway system Sunday. The project will be given BGN 20 M this year alone from the national budget.

The planned new subway section will link the Mladost quarter with Tsarigradsko Shose, one of Sofia's busiest streets, with an average of 12,000 cars passing along it every morning alone.

Stanishev and Borisov will tour the newly built tunnels in the region of the station next to the Sheraton Hotel, where Sofia's current subway network ends.

The whole new subway network in Sofia is planned to be completed by 2012.
