The 130th anniversary of the Bulgarian Constituent National Assembly is honored Sunday in the city of Veliko Turnovo, where the Assembly was originally held, Bulgarian information agencies report.
The official ceremony takes place at the building where the Assembly convened 130 ago. The Speaker of the Bulgarian Parliament, Georgi Pirinski, the Veliko Turnovo Mayor Rumen Rashev, and the Rector of the Veliko Turnovo University, Professor Plamen Legkostup are going to address the audience. Local actors and high school students will recreate the events that took place during the first ever parliamentary session in the country.
An exhibit, displaying authentic items and documents from the time, is going to be inaugurated at the "Hadezda" (Hope) community center, where the 3rd, the 4th and the 5th Grand National Assemblies were held.
A scientific forum titled "The Constituent Assembly and Bulgaria's Constitutions" will take place Monday in the city of Veliko Turnovo.
After Bulgaria regained its independence from the Ottoman Empire, the first National Assembly convened in Veliko Turnovo in 1879 to ratify the State's first Constitution, known as the Turnovo Constitution. The Constitution was ratified on April 16 1879, and the Bulgarian Parliament was transferred from the old capital Turnovgrad to Sofia, which became the capital of the country.
